Marcel Pagnol was a French writer, playwright and film director. He was born on 28 February 1895 in Aubagne, France, and died on 18 April 1974 in Paris.

Pagnol is often regarded as one of the most influential French writers of the 20th century. He is best known for his works depicting rural life and the people of Provence. His stories are characterized by their vivid characters, their humorous portrayal and their poetic description of nature.

Pagnol wrote numerous novels, plays and screenplays. Some of his other well-known works are "Marius" (1929), "Fanny" (1932), and "César" (1936), which together form the so-called "Marseille Trilogy".
