Frédéric Mistral (1830-1914) was a French poet and lexicographer, best known for his contributions to the preservation and promotion of the Provençal language and culture. He was born on September 8, 1830, in Maillane, a village in the region of Provence in southern France.

Mistral was deeply connected to his Provençal heritage and was passionate about revitalizing the Provençal language, which was considered a dialect of Occitan. He believed that the language and culture of Provence were essential elements of French national identity and deserved recognition.
